8 pounds of painkillers hidden in ‘very British snack’ boxes bound for New Orleans, officials say

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – When they opened up ‘an assortment of very British snacks’, Customs and Border Protection officers at the New Orleans Field Office discovered more than eight pounds of Clovidol pills – a strong narcotic used to treat severe pain.

According to Matthew Dyman, head of public affairs at CBP, the shipment was sent from London, bound for a personal address in New Orleans’ 7th Quarter. CBP agents intercepted the cargo in Memphis.

Dyman says the shipment contained McVittie’s Digestive milk chocolate cookies, strawberry and mallow cakes, cream crackers “and other cookies Americans never eat.”

The invoice said the shipment was “for personal use”, but Dyman says eight pounds of the pills “seem excessive for” personal use “as the manifesto states.”

The pills will be destroyed, but no arrests have been made.

“The sender and receiver have been noted,” explains Dyman, “for future consideration. “
