Hero farmer driving a tractor in the UK for a great cause

A Devon farmer has embarked on an unusual journey to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT). Victor Brook – from the Teign Valley region – set out from John O’Groats in a 61-year-old tractor, traveling across the UK to Lands End.

Victor’s journey, which has been dubbed ‘Vics Tractor Run’, began earlier this month (May 4) and has already raised over £5,000. Speaking to Devon Live, Vic said: “We had planned to do something for DAAT in 2019 but the world stood still for two years so we thought it best to go this spring.

“The air ambulance has landed in my fields a number of times. One night I helped carry a stretcher across the field and really got to see the work they do first hand. You think you you may never need it, until you do.”

Despite the long distance, Vic says the trip so far has been great fun and he even got lost in Edinburgh. He joked: “At first when we decided to do tractor riding, my wife wasn’t too happy. My wife follows in a motorhome where we sleep at night. So far, knock on wood , we had no problems with the tractor.

“We had a lot of fun so far, we got lost in Edinburgh. I was following the road with my phone but it died. I finally found a petrol station and the guy was very nice. He told me said ‘I’ll charge your phone and you can have coffee on me then you can phone your wife’, she then came over with a GPS and we managed to get back on track.”

Victor aims to cover around 100 miles a day on the tractor. He said: “We hope to descend to Bodmin or beyond if possible on Saturday (14 May), that should give us an easy run on Sunday (15 May) to descend to Lands End around 2pm.”

Victor says that during his ride, two drivers stopped him and very kindly gave him some money to go towards the cause. He said: “I have a big banner on the tractor that explains what we do, it’s quite visible to others.

Victor adds that there is also another very special guest accompanying him on his journey, whom they have named the bear DAAT. Vic says that after traveling around the country, the DAAT cuddly bear will soon be up for grabs at an auction.

He ends: “He must be tired of traveling in a tractor!”

In a statement on Facebook, a spokesperson for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust said: “After a long weeks journey from John O’ Groats, the adventurous and determined Victor Brook will arrive in Lands End this Sunday 15th May!

So far Victor has raised vital funds of over £5,000 for Devon Air Ambulance! Victor, you are amazing! Good luck for the last leg of the journey!”

At the time of publication, Vic’s Tractor Run is over £5,400. If you would like to donate, visit their fundraiser here.
