Miami F1 track open to home IndyCar and NASCAR if schedules line up

The new Formula 1 track being built for the Miami Grand Prix could see IndyCar or NASCAR action in the future if the schedules line up.

Miami will join the F1 calendar next year, with a race date of May 8 recently confirmed by organizers. The Miami International Autodrome is currently under construction around Hard Rock Stadium, and race director partner Tom Garfinkel believes it is possible to host other events there in the future, but only in a specific window of the sports calendar.

“I think it’s possible, but the limited time window from a programming standpoint is really the challenge,” Garfinkel told RACER. “You start to go too far after the race (F1) and it is very hot in Miami in the summer.

“Before the race, we have the Miami Open tennis tournament at the end of March each year, and the football season before that. So it will be limited to what we can do on the track in terms of those events, so the track and the whole experience has been designed around the Formula 1 event. “

Garfinkel has had no discussions with IndyCar or NASCAR at this point, but the new circuit is expected to meet standards for both based on FIA regulations.

But while hosting other series may be appealing, the CEO of the Miami Dolphins believes it might be more beneficial for the site to have a third F1 race somewhere in the United States in the future in order to further develop the sport.

“We haven’t worked directly with COTA, but certainly the more races we can bring, the more racing fans we can build, it’s good for everyone,” he said. “So I wish them all success, I want to see them succeed.

“I would love to possibly see a third race in the US, if that’s possible in the future and Formula 1 decides that’s what it wants to do. We believe that all ships rise with a rising tide, and if you are a true fan of motorsport in general and Formula 1 racing, then the more races the better in America.
